About the Artist
I’m Janey Chatfield, a proud Kamilaroi woman born and raised on Ngunnawal Country.
My Dad was born in Gulargambone on Burrabeedee Mission (Kamilaroi Country) and raised on Hollywood Mission (Ngunnawal Country), and I carry that legacy with deep love and fierce pride. I come from a strong Blak family, but as a fair-skinned Aboriginal woman, I’ve often felt the weight of having to prove who I am. That experience shaped me but it never shook my identity.
My art is how I speak back to that experience. It’s how I honour my family, my ancestors, and the Country that holds our stories. Being Aboriginal, being part of the world’s oldest living culture, is one of my greatest privileges, and I carry it with pride in every piece I create.
Through JC Design and Art, I share contemporary Aboriginal artworks that tell stories of connection, strength, and survival. My work is about more than creativity - it’s about truth-telling, visibility, and creating space for mob and allies alike. I’m passionate about stamping out racism, breaking down stereotypes, and showing the strength, beauty, and diversity of our people.
Every canvas, every print, every wearable piece is a celebration of identity and a reminder: we are still here, still strong, and still proud.
Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land.
